ABOUT ME

ABOUT ME

Dr Robert O'Flaherty

I am a Clinical Psychologist, registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC, Reg: PYL35174), who is Chartered by the British Psychological Society (Reg: 181156).

I worked in the NHS for over 15 years and now work full time in private practice. I am also a qualified EMDR Therapist.

I have worked in specialist centres in the NHS with people who have a range of physical health conditions, such as HIV, cystic fibrosis, cardiac difficulties and persistent pain. I am interested in the mind-body connection and how they can both greatly affect each other. In these services I worked with people with a number of difficulties; these include accepting a diagnosis and living a fulfilling life with a condition, reducing stigma and shame, disclosing to others, relationship and sexual difficulties in relation to physical health conditions, improving adherence to treatment and understanding the mind-body connection.

My research interests lie in men’s mental health and factors affecting men accessing psychological therapy. A number of men say they feel too embarrassed or do not want to be perceived by others as being weak by accessing therapy. They then tend to go on silently struggling or using other unhelpful coping strategies. However, I strongly believe and recognise that it can take a lot of strength to seek support and I aim to create a safe space where clients can share their experiences, explore their feelings and make positive changes within a confidential setting. As well as men, I also work with people of all genders.
